Beginner Solo Contest - Tuesday, April 28th
The Beginner Band Solo Contest is on Tuesday, April 28th at Pearson Middle School. This contest is for all students in Beginner Band, as well as any Concert/Symphonic Band students that did not attend the district contest in January. This contest runs from 4:30-7:00 with each student having a 5–7 minute time slot. Click HERE to view the schedule. At this time, the schedule is finalized, and time requests/changes will not be accepted except in special circumstances.
A few notes about the contest procedures:
Students need to arrive 15-20 minutes before their solo's start time so they can find their room and warm‐up. Warm-up will take place in the band hall. No students should play their instrument in the hallway
Students should leave after they perform. They will receive results and awards from their band directors in class the next day.
Families are allowed (and invited!) to be in the performance room while their student is playing.
Since this is a performance for a live judge, we are asking that students wear nice clothes to the event. This includes collared shirts, slacks, dresses, pantsuits, dress shoes, etc. We ask that students avoid wearing jeans, shorts, tennis shoes, or sandals.
We are looking forward to a great evening of performances!

Pearson Band Parent Association (PBPA) Board Positions for 2026-2027 School Year
We need you to serve as a member of the PBPA Board! The PBPA, or Band Boosters, play a vital role in helping the Pearson Band program run. Because of their support, we are able to participate in events and competitions, bring in clinicians to work with students, and hold social events.
The Vice President position is open for the 2026-2027 school year. For more information about the roles of each position and to express interest, email Mr. Jenson at jensonm@friscoisd.org
School-Owned Instrument Return
On Thursday, May 7th, all school-owned instruments must be returned to Pearson Middle School to prepare for our annual inventory audit and so the instruments can be checked for any needed repairs.
School-owned instruments include Oboe, Bassoon, Bass Clarinet, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, French Horn, Euphonium, and Tuba
Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, and Percussion ARE NOT school-owned instruments.
After we have completed inventory and check for repairs, students who play a school-owned instrument will be issued one to use over the summer. Priority will go to those who will be attending a band camp and/or taking summer lessons. These instruments will be passed out starting on Friday, May 15th.
All other instruments should be kept over the summer (if continuing in band) or returned to the music store you are renting from (if not continuing in band).
We will continue to play in class through Thursday May 21st. Store rental returns for kids not continuing in band can begin on Friday, May 22nd.
Please contact the band directors if you have any questions.
Pearson Middle School Band Summer Camp / Build the Beat
The Pearson Symphonic and Concert Bands will perform at the Build the Beat community Pep Rally on Friday, August 7th. Athletics students will be able to participate in both athletics and band events for the day. To prepare for the event, we will have a summer band camp to help us learn the new music that we will be playing. Due to roof construction at Pearson, this camp will look a little different than it has in year's past. Our camp will be held on Tuesday August 4th, Wednesday, August 5th, Thursday August 6, and Friday August 7. All rehearsals will be at Pearson Middle School. Students will be able to enter through the exterior band hall doors.
Low Reeds, French Horns, Euphoniums, and Tubas should be brought from home for these rehearsals and the Build The Beat performance. If that is not possible for your family, email Mr. Jenson and we will find a solution.
The schedule is as follows:
Tuesday, August 4th: Section Rehearsals-
Theme: Superhero Day! Wear your favorite superhero shirt.
4:30-6:00 PM- Flutes, Oboes, Trumpets, French Horns, and Percussion.
Wednesday, August 5th: Section Rehearsals
Theme: Crazy Hat Day! Wear your craziest hat.
4:30-6:00 PM - Clarinets, Bass Clarinets, Alto/Tenor/Bari Saxophones, Bassoons, Trombones, Euphoniums, Tubas, and Percussion.
Thursday August 6: Full Band
Theme: Battle of the Sections! Coordinate with your section mates to match a theme (Sports, the color red, Minecraft, etc.) Whichever section has the highest participation will win a prize!
4:30-7:00 pm - Full Band Rehearsal (All Instruments)
Friday August 7: Performance!
Theme: Band Shirt
5:00-6:00 pm - Build the Beat Pep Rally in the Pearson MS Gym. Students will wear their 2025-2026 Pearson Band Shirts.
Due to the importance of the preparation for Build the Beat and the 2025-2026 school year, all rehearsals and performances are required for all Pearson Band members. We understand that some families may still be out of town or on vacation during this time. If your family will be out of town, please communicate that with your band director ASAP.
We are looking forward to both our summer band camp and the Build the Beat Pep Rally! It will be a lot of fun to see everyone again and make music together.
Summer Band Camps
We strongly encourage your student to attend a band camp this summer! It is a great opportunity for your student to improve on their instrument and make new friends. There are many options in the DFW metroplex and around the state.

Practice Journals
All Beginning Band students should be taking their instrument home and practicing daily. During their practice time, students should play and reinforce concepts being taught in class and work on any material they are struggling to play. A daily practice habit is essential to becoming a great musician! Please help your student to build this habit by encouraging (and sometimes telling) them to practice every day.
All members of the Pearson Band have been assigned a practice journal to track their practicing and to help them develop practice habits that will lead them to success in band. This is a graded assignment due every Monday and must be signed by a parent to be considered complete. The rubric and expectations for the practice journal can be found here.
Parents, the following is a fantastic guide for what and how your student should be practicing: https://practicingguide.weebly.com/
